We all want our home to be as clean as it can be, but what is the difference between a standard cleaning and a deep cleaning? The most commonly performed cleaning is a standard cleaning. You only need to be concerned with a deep cleaning once or twice a year, depending on the condition. Deep cleanings remove slow building grime that collects over the year. Some of the major differences are explained below.

Standard Cleaning

A standard, regular cleaning, will normally consist of all the tasks you do on a regular basis to keep your home well-organized and fresh. The maintenance level will depend on your lifestyle. For example, do you have teenagers who leave their softball gear everywhere? Do you have a toddler who is finger painting the kitchen with their food? Or maybe a pet that leaves fur all over the carpet like tumbleweeds? Regardless of whom lives in the home, chances are high that you will need standard cleanings to keep it fresh.

We normally suggest a standard clean be done once a week. For those considering hiring a professional housecleaning service, a standard cleaning is usually contracted on an on-going basis. A standard cleaning will usually include the following:

  • Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors
  • General tidying
  • Dusting living areas
  • Cleaning bathroom and wiping down kitchen surfaces
  • Taking out any trash

Deep Cleaning

You usually only need to perform a deep cleaning on your home once or twice a year. Similar to when you move-in or move-out of a property.

This job will usually entail attending to all the nooks and crannies that accumulate dirt and grime over your day to day life. A deep cleaning will normally include all that a standard cleaning does plus additional tasks to thoroughly spruce up your home. Some of these additional tasks include:

  • Removing soap scum from bathroom and kitchen surfaces
  • Scrubbing tiles and grout
  • Cleaning beneath and under appliances
  • Wiping down and dusting baseboards
  • Dusting fan blades
  • Washing windows
  • Cleaning the oven and microwave
  • Carpet shampooing
  • Cleaning mirrors & light fixtures
  • Dusting blinds
  • Cleaning cabinet fronts
  • Vacuuming all carpet crevices
  • Dusting vents

Which do I choose?

Maintaining your home will require you to perform both regularly, just on difference levels of frequency. Hiring a professional for a standard or even a deep cleaning will be less time consuming for you, but deep cleanings will be more expensive that a standard cleaning. However they do not need to be performed as often.

We often recommend our clients have a deep cleaning performed twice a year to ensure your home is safe and free from mold and bacteria. A standard cleaning on the other hand is usually performed weekly or bi-weekly to ensure your home stays tidy and welcoming for your guests.
